Coconut

Coconut is both an oil and food crop with immense potential. As an oil seed it is the richest source of vegetable oil accounting for about 6% of the total vegetable output in the country. Primary processing of coconut to make copra is a practice that can fetch value addition to the coconut growers.

COPRA

Marketfed started procurement of copra during 1978 with a long-term objective of ensuring reasonable price to the coconut growers and revitalisation of Primary Marketing Co-operatives in the State. During 1978-79 we could procure 225 MT worth Rs. 89 lakhs but Marketfed had subsequently achieved a remarkable position in the history of copra market in the State after it's humble beginning. We gradually made progress in the procurement operation and attained a glorified figure of 22000 MT valued Rs. 2769 lakhs during 1985-86. Even though the quantity handled by Marketfed is not substantial when compared with the then total production of about 3 lakhs tones of copra in the State  we could make an impact on the copra price trend in the state and in the upcountry markets of North India. In this context, it may be remembered that copra trade has been the monopoly business of private traders who were traditionally well established in the sector. The leadership in the copra market was continued by Marketfed by achieving the procurement figure 13003 tones valued Rs. 300 lakhs, during 1994-95.

Now, we are having a reasonable quantity of good quality copra and we are prepared to supply Copra at competitive rate to any part of the country/ world.

Under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) of the Govt. Of India, Marketfed has been procuring copra on behalf of NAFED since March 2000.
